Garages and other outdoor work areas can be an incredible asset to any home providing ample room to complete projects that may not fit or be possible inside the home. That being said however, there are plenty of garages out there that are not being used because they are cluttered, messy, and generally disorganized. There are a few tips and tricks you can use to get your garage in tip top shape in just a matter of days that can help you reclaim this valuable space.
1. Weed out the actual garbage
Sometimes garbage like old boxes, broken toys, and things you have been meaning to fix end up in your garage taking up valuable space. Though these items may not have been garbage when you placed them here, they are now and should be removed. By removing things that have no real purpose you can open up space for items that you need like tools and cars. Weeding out items that are no longer able to be used by anyone is the first step to organizing your space.
2. Sort through items you are storing
Often times you store items thinking that you will get them out again when the time comes, many people however forget that they have these items stored away and end up buying multiples. Though it may have served you to have two Christmas wreaths when you could not find the first one, after Christmas is passed it is important that you get rid of one of them so that you have only one of each necessary item. Also, you may have been storing things that were dependent on the age of your children like clothes or toys, do not keep things that they have outgrown simply because they are in good shape, donate or sell these items to keep your garage free of clutter.
3. Create a roster of sorts
Every time you place an item in your garage write it down in one centralized location. Likewise, each time you remove something mark it off the list so that you know precisely what is in your garage at all times. It is important that you know what you have stored at all times so that you won’t buy repeats or so that you can access it quickly. Having a centralized roster of sorts is a great easy way to know just what you have at all times.
4. Give each item its space
Create a space for each item or type of item so that they can be easily accessed when they are needed. Using organizational Tupperware or large tubs can help keep smaller items of like use or season together so that you can get to them. By giving each item in your garage a specific place to stay you can reduce clutter dramatically. After you come up with an organizational system that works, keep to it. Do not put items in their place for a month or two then fall behind, keep to the system to reduce clutter. Try to avoid having any items just sitting on counters or surfaces.
Have someone to answer to if the garage goes haywire again. Often times it is not enough to organize and expect yourself to keep it up. Having someone that can help keep you in check is a great way to keep things tidy through the year.
Any of these tips is a great way to get your garage back to working order. Getting things organized and decluttered is the best way to insure that this valuable space is ready to be used. Just after you’ve enabled yourself to actually open your garage doors properly without anything falling out, will you fully appreciate the work you’ve done. However, decluttering is a process and as such you should not expect to be able to get it right in an hour or so.
